Message: Rethinking Resistance

Speaker: Jarrett Stevens

Service Date: July 07, 2019 Plain Print Version

  • What comes to mind when you hear the word "Resistance?"
  • Where have you experienced resistance in your life? What kind of a list can you come up with?

Jarrett challenged us to rethink or re-frame our view of resistance.  If we were to view resistance the way exercise/weight-training utilizes resistance, how does that change your view of resistance in your life. (read the James passage)

  • Spend some time reviewing Moses' story, have someone read the passages in Exodus.
  • Discuss each of Moses' objections-where did his resistance come from?

Self-limiting Beliefs- the stories we tell ourselves that prevent us from taking action. We all have them. As a group, process common self-limiting beliefs together and if comfortable, identify and list what ones you may have adopted in your own life.

Discuss as a group what you do to win the "war that is in your mind."

Walk through the Reflection content together.

Figure out how to support one another to actually follow through on the "DO" content this week. How can you be an encouragement to each other this week?

"Resistance is not a peripheral opponent. Resistance arises from within. It is self-generated and self-perpetuated. Resistance is the enemy within."
Steven Pressfield, The War of Art

Reflect

Using a search engine, research passages in Scripture that tell us who God says we are to him. Some helpful sites are: https://www.openbible.info/topics/who_i_am Bible.org Biblestudytools.com

Do

Create a list of those identities-how God sees us. Find some post-it or sticky notes. Write down some truths about who GOD (I AM) says you are and place them strategically around your house, car, place of work. Meditate on who GOD says you are this week.
