Death of a King

They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”  Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba,Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”  -  Mark 14:32-36

The essence of sin is man substituting himself for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for man.
John Stott

Scriptures for Thought

Mark 10:45...to give his life for the ransom of many. Mark 14:57,61...Are you the messiah...? Mark 14:60-63...the high priest tore his clothes.

Questions

-In Mk 14:35-36 Jesus cries out to the Father and calls him something no one ever dared, "Abba" or Daddy. What does it mean to you to know that you are also Abbas child and that He is your daddy? -Have you ever considered the irony and meaning of Barabbas' name; "Son of the Father"? This completely slipped by Pilate. Share with your group the meaning for you of this incredible moment. -On the cross it's judgement day. Jesus receives more on the cross than we could ever comprehend. This is an intimate and very personal act. What does this mean to know Jesus received what you deserved? -Psalm 22 prophesies it and Mark 15:34 fulfills it. "And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). The Son is covered with our sin. What is the power of this moment and Jesus' words mean to you?

Prepare Yourself for Easter

Read and reflect on Hebrews 10:19-22. Spend time this week reflecting on the fact that the curtain to the "Holy of Holies" has been torn in two and we can boldly enter the throne room of Gods grace.
