Message: What is Worship?

Speaker: Greg Holder

Service Date: February 02, 2020 Plain Print Version

In our series “God Help us” this week’s message is on “worship”. So, as we open our time in prayer- let’s pray that this very act of discussing, studying, and learning about worship will be an act of worship in itself and may it be a pleasing aroma to God.

Definitions/Descriptions of “worship”

—Have someone look up "worship" in a dictionary and share with the group.

  •  The Greek word most often translated as worship is “proskuneo”- to fall down before or bow down before-
  • Other words translated as worship have the connotation of “serving”

As a group talk about what does worship look like? Give examples.

Assign the Scripture references in the content section to read and discuss within the context of worship.

How do you worship --when you are alone?

  • When you are in a crowd, say at church?
  • What, if anything is different and why?
  • Is there a way that you long to worship but can’t bring yourself to?
  • What is holding you back?

What does it mean to you to worship with your "Time, Talents, and Treasures?"

Consider closing in prayer with a worship song washing over your group.

“Worship is the strategy by which we interrupt our preoccupation with ourselves and attend to the presence of God.”
Eugene Peterson

Read

• Colossians 3:12-17 • Hebrews 12:28 • Psalm 16:8 • Romans 12:1 • 1 Corinthians 10:31 • Hebrews 10:24-25 • 1 Corinthians 12-14 (note the middle chapter)

Reflect

Greg mentioned there is a Vertical and a Horizontal aspect to worship. Discuss what that looks like. “Everything you hear has some kind of an impact on you and changes how you respond to the rest of the world.” How does this Seth Horowitz quote fit into this?

Do

“Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking around life—and place it before God as an offering.” Romans 12:1 The Message Translation What would this look like for you this week? Pick one area to work on placing before God this week and if you're comfortable, share with the group to help with accountability.
