Message: The Cave of My Life

Speaker: David Hawkins

Service Date: January 20, 2019 Plain Print Version

David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him. 1 Samuel 22:1-2

You need to know that some attacks come at you not because you have done something wrong, but simply because God's hand is on your life. The enemy will often attack because you are seen as a "future" threat. He's trembling, fearing what you may become.

What Did David Do In The Cave?

1) HE PRAYS: Read Psalm 142. In the midst of Davids lowest point he never loses sight of God. How different that is from so many people, even people who proclaim Christ, who go through difficulties yet wonder, "God where are you?" 2) HE TRUSTS GOD'S PLAN: When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn. Psalm 142:3-4 David is declaring his entire existence is in God's hands. 3) HE PRAYS AGAIN: Then I pray to you, O Lord. I say, "You alone are my place of refuge. You alone are all I really want in life. Psalm 142:5 4) HE WAS HONEST AND DIDN'T HIDE: Hear my cry, for I am very low. Rescue me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me. Psalm 142:6 It's perfectly OK to admit you are not OK. 5) HE PRAISED GOD: "Wake up my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. I will thank you Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations..." Psalm 57:8-9 David does something strange. He starts singing and dancing in the cave.

Discussion:

Are you living in a cave right now? Do your problems seem bigger than God? David Hawkins said, "Praise is your choice to acknowledge God even in the midst of the drama of your life." What does this mean to you? Is your capacity to praise God suffering? How can the story of David help you find your way out of your cave?

Remember:

Be compassionate when you see someone in a cave. Broken people don't throw stones at broken people.
