Message: You're Invited to Worship

Speaker: Tim Bounds

Service Date: August 25, 2019 Plain Print Version

  •  Where did you experience the goodness of God this summer?
  • Talk about Tim's definition of “Thin Places”
  • What are some ways you respond when you experience a “thin place”?
As Christ-followers we are invited into several things:
  • Community (fellowship w/one another)
  • Mission Dei (participating in the mission of The Church)
  • Worship

Have someone look up the definition of “worship” and discuss w/group.

  • Look up to read aloud:  Deuteronomy 30:17-18
The implication is that we were made to worship- and we’re going to worship something.
  •  How do you see the John Calvin quote:  "The Human mind. . . is a perpetual idol factory" playing out today?
  • “You are what you eat” Tim’s example of babies eating carrots and sweet potatoes implies our souls metabolize what we worship the way our bodies metabolize what we eat. “You are what you worship”
We start to look like or reflect Jesus.
  • How do you worship? How do you connect with God? Go around and share
Some examples given as examples but list is not necessarily complete. Some may have other options to share:
    •  Music
    • Nature/creation
    • Work
    • Study Scriptures
    • Serving
    • Community Time

One of the ways we’re invited to worship in Scripture is to “gather” to participate in corporate worship.

  • Read together:
    • Acts 2:42
    • Hebrews 10:24-25
  • Discuss how your group is doing with making regular weekly corporate worship a priority.
Are there ways to do better? Share and encourage one another to make the next few weeks a priority. Here’s the line-up for the next 3 weekends:
    • August 31-Sept 1     Sean Palmer (from Ecclesia church in Houston)
    • Sept 7-8                     For the Lou (have you signed up? Don’t forget you can watch a special worship service during our regular service times that weekend.)
    • Sept 14-15                 Greg’s back, kick off Fall series: “The More Than Good Life” with special guest: Stu Gerrard

  • Final point- We worship by how we serve:
    •  Philippians 2:5-7
Discuss how this looks as we enter into our For The Lou project. Focus on quote from Greg Holder:
  • Worship/serve well:
      • Sign up—but also please Show up! (contact your leader if you won’t be there.
      • Just serve- rather than trying to make “helpful” suggestions.

“What we “do” matters. But “how” we do what we do matters and the “what” and the “how” are inextricably connected.”
Greg Holder

How are you wired to worship?

Do

You don't need our permission to serve. Sign up for "FortheLou" or find something you and your group can do to serve in your area.
